We first established a name in cloth diapering with our online business Better for Babies. In the Spring of 2004 we were inspired to make a natural environmentally friendly diaper line. The other goals were fit, style, and trimness with absorbency.
The most beloved of all little beetles is the lady bug, sanctified in medieval times as 'the beetle of our lady'. Indeed, its smallness and harmlessness invokes in us a feeling of joy. Friendly to the environment, little beetle is a fitting name for a cloth diaper line. The beetle's elytra (outer wing covers) trap in moisture and encase its soft hind wings and underside. Nature's example of a well designed diaper line.
With the help of our muse, some months and many prototypes, the design of Little Beetle diapers was established along with the polished idea of our new and innovative inner beetle booster. Our hemp fitted diapers quickly garnered a name for themselves, and we then set to fill out our organic diapering line-up.
We find that design intelligence and environmental intelligence go hand in hand. The story of conventional cotton farming in third world countries reveals numerous family tragedies. According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that 20,000 people die each year as a result of the pesticides sprayed on cotton. Organic means pesticide free. This is why we make organic diapers and its why our customers armed with the knowledge of organics pay a premium for our products [This is why we sell organic diapers, and it's why the Little Beetle ONE is our favorite diaper.]
Fair Trade practices ensure that a decent wage is paid to farm workers with an additional income for environmental and social projects. Our newest diaper, the Little Beetle ONE is now fair trade in addition to organic. Our Little Beetle organic Merino wool covers and soaker shorts use Mother Nature's ingenious designs to provide a trim, breathable and completely natural alternative to plastic diaper pants. Little Beetle Learners (commonly known as training pants) close the gap between cloth and disposables with an innovative pull-on, snap-off feature. 100% natural in every way, from the diaper itself to the optional doubler, diaper cover to pants, trainers/learners, changing mat, wet bag and wipes, we allow parents to bundle their little one in nothing but organics.
In 2008, we relocated all our manufacturing efforts to one location and opened our own sewing facility. And, yes, we still get the same great fair trade organic cotton from India. But, now, with production 5 miles from BFB headquarters, we can respond to demand more quickly, and we can stay on top of quality issues.
